OpenAPI Tools

The parent organization behind OpenAPI Generator (OpenAPITools.org), formed around the 2018 fork of Swagger Codegen openapi-generator-docs. Not a company: a contributor body funded through Open Collective backers and company sponsorships (Datadog, Adyen, Kong, Thales, Svix and dozens more), with infrastructure donated — GoDaddy for domains, Linode for the VPS, Gradle for Develocity.

It states plainly that it is not affiliated with the OpenAPI Initiative, the body that actually owns the OpenAPI spec openapi-generator-docs. So the most-used implementation of the standard sits outside the standard’s own governance — the spec is stewarded in one place and its dominant code generator in another.

Why it’s on the map

The synthesis notes that this spoke’s sources skew big-tech open source: Microsoft’s TypeScript, Yandex’s yaff, Epic’s lore, Google’s dart, JetBrainskotlin — infrastructure built for an internal problem and released. OpenAPI Tools is the first source here with no corporate parent at all, and it exists specifically because contributors left one. It’s the spoke’s first data point on developer infrastructure as commons rather than as vendor output.
