OSINT — encyclopedic overview (Wikipedia)
The neutral, encyclopedic overview of open-source intelligence — the spoke’s first non-tool source and its first T2/neutral anchor. Where the founding corpus documents OSINT through individual tools (llm-osint, kallisto-osinter, swaggerspy, kafsiem), this grounds the discipline itself: its definition, history, the source taxonomy, the process, and the field-level risks.
What it adds
- Definition & remit. OSINT is the collection and analysis of data from open sources to produce actionable intelligence, serving national security, law enforcement, and business — across both classified and unclassified work.
- History (the IC roots the spoke lacked). Practices go back to 19th-century press monitoring; the modern US line runs from the 1941 Foreign Broadcast Monitoring Service to the Open Source Center (established November 2005 on the 9/11 Commission’s 2004 recommendation, absorbing the CIA’s Foreign Broadcast Information Service). The OSINT Foundation (2022) professionalizes the discipline inside the US Intelligence Community. So OSINT is an old institutional practice the current AI tooling automates, not a new one.
- Six source categories. Media; internet (blogs, social platforms, citizen media); government data; academic/professional literature; commercial (satellite imagery, financial data); and grey literature (technical reports, patents). This taxonomy sharpens what osint‘s “publicly available information” actually spans.
- The OSINT Framework — a GitHub-hosted directory of 30+ tool categories, the field’s own map of the manual toolkit awesome-social-engineering also catalogs.
A new risk dimension
Beyond the spoke’s standing dual-use / privacy tension, this source names a distinct hazard: disinformation vulnerability. Open sources can be deliberately contaminated — extremist groups and state actors plant false information — so the analyst’s problem is not only aggregation-harm but source trustworthiness under an “information explosion.” That is an input-integrity risk the autonomous-profiling tools (ai-osint) inherit and arguably worsen: an LLM that gathers and believes public data at scale is exactly what a planted-information campaign targets. See synthesis.
Tier & provenance
T2 — encyclopedic overview of an established discipline (the neutral anchor role, cf. the analogous Wikipedia anchor other spokes use). Facts above are the article’s; history dates and org names are stable.
