AX (Google)
An Apache-2.0 orchestrator for autonomous agent workloads, published by Google as google/ax (repository
created 2026-03-30; 8,464 GitHub stars on 2026-09-23). It runs on a Kubernetes cluster and
hands the sandboxes themselves to Agent Substrate (google-ax-infoq).
What it does
You declare a Task with its Workspace (repos, MCP servers, skills, or a setup goal), a Gateway
(outbound host allowlist) and a Model. AX creates the sandbox, prepares the workspace, limits the
network and runs the task. An idle task can be suspended to a checkpoint and resumed later on another
worker. Operators get kubectl-style verbs plus ax ssh into a running sandbox.
Why it belongs in this spoke
AX is an answer to the question compute-sandbox left open: how to run a fleet of sandboxes rather than only create them. Its design makes the same etcd complaint modal-1m-sandboxes made, and fixes it differently. Modal removed central coordination from the creation path. AX keeps declared state and reconciliation workers, and moves the store from etcd to Redis Streams. See synthesis.
Limits
Pre-stable, with breaking changes promised. Every performance figure is Agent Substrate's own. No production user, incident or independent measurement is held here.
