Publii
Publii is "a free, open-source static CMS that gives you control over your content, files, and hosting" — and it is a desktop application with a graphical interface, not a command-line tool. You install it on Windows 10+, macOS 12+ or 64-bit Linux, write in a GUI, and press publish. "Build locally. Publish globally."
GPL-3.0, 7,296★, 469 forks. Created June 2018, pushed 2026-09-02 (the day of this ingest), latest v0.47.9 (23 July 2026) — still 0.x after eight years and ~17,481 builds.
How it works
- No terminal. The whole point. "Even non-devs can rock this!" is a testimonial the project chose to put on its front page.
- Static output, no server runtime: it "publishes ready-made files without a database, PHP, or a public admin panel, reducing the server-side attack surface."
- Deploy targets: GitHub Pages, GitLab Pages, Netlify, Amazon S3, Google Cloud, FTP, SFTP, or manual. "Configure a destination once, then sync later changes from the app."
- Privacy posture: "Publii adds no tracking scripts by default", with built-in compliance tooling.
The gap it actually fills
Every generator in this spoke is a CLI that a developer runs, and the corpus has been describing the WordPress exodus (wordpress-market-share-decline, headless-cms) without holding a single tool aimed at the person actually leaving. WordPress's users are overwhelmingly not terminal users. Publii is the first source here built for them: the static-site value proposition delivered through a desktop GUI, with the WordPress attack surface named explicitly as what it removes — no database, no PHP, no public admin panel.
That reframes the growth edge this hunt was answering. The edge said "generators outside the JS/Go/Rust roster" and read as a language gap. Publii is not a language gap; it is a user gap. The roster was homogeneous in who it assumed at the keyboard, and that assumption was invisible until something broke it.
It also stretches the spoke's own category. Publii calls itself a CMS, and this spoke pages headless CMSes (strapi) as a separate class that feeds a generator. Publii is neither: the editor and the generator are one desktop binary with no server on either side. Whether that is a third shape or an edge case of the first two is not settled by one source.
What is unclear
Eight years at 0.x, with a four-part version string that encodes a build number, is either careful versioning or a project that never declared itself finished; the site says nothing about it. The GPL-3.0 licence on a desktop app that generates static files is the second copyleft generator paged today, after Pelican's AGPL-3.0, and its practical effect on a user's own site is not addressed anywhere fetched.
