Fly.io — source summary

The official Fly.io pricing/docs page, fetched 2026-06-09. URL-only ingest (no copy in raw/). Fly.io is a developer-focused platform for running containers globally — the first managed developer PaaS in this spoke, contrast partner to the raw IaaS of hetzner-cloud.

What it is

Apps run as Fly Machines — lightweight VMs that boot OCI container images, placed in regions close to users. Billing is per organization, pay-as-you-go, with no mandatory subscription: you “pick and choose which pieces you need.”

Pricing (volatile snapshot, re-verified 2026-08-10)

  • Compute: billed per second while a Machine runs. Concrete floor as of this re-read: a shared-cpu-1x / 256 MB Machine is $0.0028/hour ≈ $2.02/month (Amsterdam). A stopped Machine pays only root-filesystem storage, $0.15 per GB per 30 days.
  • Volumes: $0.15/GB per month; snapshots $0.08/GB per month, first 10 GB free monthly.
  • Egress: $0.02/GB North America & Europe · $0.04/GB Asia-Pacific, Oceania, South America · $0.12/GB Africa & India. Metered, unlike Hetzner’s bundled traffic.
  • IPv4: dedicated address $2/mo. Static egress IPs $0.005/hour (~$3.60/mo).
  • TLS: $0.10/mo single-hostname (first 10 free per org), $1/mo wildcard.
  • Reservations: 40% off reserved compute blocks — shared from $36/year for $5/mo of usage, performance from $144/year for $20/mo of usage.
  • Fly Kubernetes: $75/month per cluster, on top of Machine costs.
  • No free tier for new customers.

What changed since 2026-06-09: the June snapshot recorded RAM at “about $5 per 30 days per GB” and gave no whole-machine figure. The page now publishes preset prices, so the entry-level number is pinned. Egress gained two published bands above the NA/EU rate (Africa/India at $0.12/GB is the North-American rate), and the 40% reservation discount now has stated minimums.

Footprint & positioning

18+ regions (Amsterdam, Ashburn, Chicago, Dallas, Frankfurt, Johannesburg, London, LA, Mumbai, Paris, San Jose, São Paulo, Secaucus, Singapore, Stockholm, Sydney, Tokyo, Toronto). Where hetzner-cloud sells cheap fixed per-core capacity, Fly bills provisioned resources pro-rated by time and competes on edge proximity + developer ergonomics — the same managed-PaaS bet as render and railway (see synthesis).
