GraalVM

Oracle's JDK distribution and compiler toolkit for Java. Read from the project homepage, so every claim below is first-party and the page is a product pitch. It gives no figures at all: the performance claims are "instantly" and "a fraction". The page announces release 25.4, undated; the only date is a 2018–2026 copyright line. Hence freshness: volatile and no published:.

Native Image: Java compiled ahead of time

The centrepiece is ahead-of-time compilation of a Java application into a standalone native executable. The page says such an executable needs "only a fraction of memory and CPU resources required by a JVM", starts "instantly" and needs "no warmup to run at peak performance". It also holds only the classes, methods and fields the program uses, which the page presents as a smaller attack surface. A statically linked build can run in a scratch container image.

The trade is implicit in that last claim. Reachability is decided at build time, so a build step now owns what the JVM used to decide at run time. That is why this belongs here as a build tool, not as a language feature.

Tooling named around it:

  • Build: Maven and Gradle plugins ("Native Build Tools").
  • Test: JUnit 5.
  • Debug: GDB, with breakpoints and stepping through Java source.
  • Monitor: optional JFR, JMX, heap dumps and jvmstat.

Graal JIT and the polyglot side

The GraalVM JDK also ships the Graal optimizing just-in-time compiler for running on a JVM as usual. The polyglot layer ("Graal Languages", built on Truffle) lists GraalPy (Python), GraalJS (JavaScript), GraalWasm (WebAssembly) and Espresso (Java on Truffle): embed those languages in a Java app, or run them faster. The homepage says nothing about how well any of them runs.

Where it is used

Spring Boot, Micronaut, Helidon and Quarkus are said to offer "first-class support". Cloud SDKs are listed for AWS, Azure, GCP and Oracle Cloud. Runs on Linux, macOS and Windows. Named adopters (Disney, Oracle, Picnic, Pkl, Alibaba, Facebook, IntelliJ, MySQL) are logos, not evidence of a particular workload. The page states no licence.

Fit in this wiki

A compiler as build infrastructure, in the same class as typescript-7-go-compiler: another toolchain whose speed case is made by its own maker and carries no number. Compare monomorphization, which also pushes decisions from run time to build time.

Cross-spoke context (not ingested there): Java the language is ../programming-languages-wiki's subject (java); that spoke already mentions the GraalVM Development Kit in java-news-roundup-aug31-2026. This page owns GraalVM only as compiler and build tool.
