The database company behind the 768-servers explainer. PlanetScale maintains Vitess — the open-source MySQL sharding system that presents a sharded fleet as one logical database — and built Neki, the equivalent proxy router for Postgres. Its managed product packages this sharding infrastructure as a service; it recommends sharding beyond a few terabytes.

PlanetScale is the spoke's first vendor node — the distributed-SQL / sharding stratum, as distinct from the embedded-engine maker behind turso.

Second source arrived 2026-09-19 (the-architecture-of-neki), and it makes the company's shape legible: one sharding architecture, two engines. vitess for MySQL, neki for Postgres, with the same topology (edge router, per-instance sidecar, control plane) and the same workflow vocabulary (MoveTables, Reshard, OnlineDDL) on both sides, and overlapping engineering staff — harshit-gangal wrote the Neki architecture post and a top-five share of Vitess's commits.

Neki is in Platform Preview as of 2026-09-18, not general availability. The company still publishes no numbers for it: no latency, no throughput, no shard count, no Vitess comparison.
