Postgres data movement and API layers

The remainder of awesome-postgres' Utilities section — the entries that are not schema migration and not monitoring — as catalogued on 2026-08-20, at the catalog's word (T3). Utilities runs to roughly sixty entries and is the catalog's junk drawer; sorting it by job is the only way to read it.

Getting data in

pgloader (load data using the COPY streaming protocol) · pg_bulkload (high-speed data loading) · pgfutter (import CSV/JSON) · pgclimb (export data in different formats) · pgsync (sync PostgreSQL data locally)

Migrating off another engine

ora2pg (export Oracle schemas to PostgreSQL) · pg_chameleon (real-time MySQL → PostgreSQL replica) · mysql-postgresql-converter (conversion script) · DBConvert Streams (cloud-native real-time migration)

Four entries pointing one direction, and none pointing back. The catalog contains no Postgres-to-anything migration tool, which is a fact about the ecosystem's gravity rather than about the list.

The database as an API

PostgREST (serve a fully RESTful API from the database) · pREST (RESTful API from Postgres) · PostGraphile (instant GraphQL API and schema generation) · Hasura GraphQL Engine (instant realtime GraphQL APIs)

Four independent implementations of one idea: the schema already describes the data, so generate the API from it and delete the hand-written CRUD layer. PostgREST is the highest-value primary read in this page — it is the oldest and most opinionated, and the argument it makes (that row-level security should be the authorization layer, so the API server needs no auth logic) is a database-design claim, not a web-framework one. It is also the engine under one of the managed platforms in postgres-managed-services.

Change data capture and audit

bemi (automatic data change tracking) · pgMemento (audit trail via triggers and PL/pgSQL, catalogued under Extensions) · cyanaudit (in-database column-level DML logging) · PGAudit (session and object audit logging)

All of these read or reproduce what logical-replication decodes, or reimplement it with triggers. The trigger-based ones pay a write-path cost the decoding ones do not — a distinction none of the catalog lines make.

Connection routing and gateways

PgBouncer (paged: pgbouncer) · pgpool-II (middleware for pooling, replication, load balancing) · GatewayD (cloud-native database gateway)

pgpool-II deserves a primary read as the counter-design to pgbouncer: it bundles pooling with query routing and replication management in one process, where PgBouncer does exactly one thing. That is a genuine architectural disagreement about where the proxy's responsibilities end.

Operational odds and ends

pg_activity (top-like monitoring) · pgCenter (interface to statistics and management tasks) · pgbadger (fast log analyzer) · postgres-checkup (diagnostics for database health) · pg_insights (SQL for monitoring health) · PGInsight (CLI for deep inspection) · pg-formatter (SQL beautifier) · ldap2pg (sync roles and privileges from YAML/LDAP) · pgspot (spot vulnerabilities in extension scripts) · pg-spot-operator (stateful Postgres on AWS Spot VMs) · pg_timetable (advanced job scheduler) · pglistend (lightweight LISTEN/NOTIFY daemon) · NServiceBus.Transport.PostgreSql (.NET message broker on Postgres) · Greenmask (anonymization and synthetic data) · ScaffoldHub.io (generate fullstack apps, commercial) · Qail (Rust-first typed AST pipeline with compile-time checks) · pg_docs_bot (browser extension for the docs) · yoke (HA cluster with auto-failover) · ZSON (transparent JSONB compression, catalogued under Extensions) · PGXN client (command-line client for the extension network, see postgresql-extensions)

Two of those are misfiled and worth relocating in the reader's head: yoke belongs in postgres-ha-tooling, and pgspot — a linter for vulnerabilities in extension install scripts — is a security consequence of the extension model postgresql-extensions describes, and the only entry in the catalog that treats CREATE EXTENSION as an attack surface. The catalog's one-entry Security section (Acra, "SQL database security suite with encryption and firewall") is recorded here for completeness.
