Plato

Athenian, 429?–347 BCE. The corpus has been arguing about the Western tradition since it started and only now holds the man who founded it.

Two things make him the reference point Kraut’s SEP entry says he is. First, the forms: what we see is defective, and the real objects — Beauty, Goodness, Justice — are eternal, unchanging, outside space and time, and serve as paradigms for the sensible world. Second, the dialogue as the vehicle. Nearly every surviving work is one, with Socrates as principal speaker (the Laws excepted), grouped traditionally into early refutative pieces, the theory-bearing middle (Phaedo, Republic, Symposium) and a stylometrically identified late group.

The Socrates of the pages is not a fixed portrait. The early dialogues stay nearer the historical man; later, the name carries Plato’s own developed positions.

Where he sits in this spoke’s three threads

  • The reach of reason. The forms are rationalism‘s founding move, before Descartes and Spinoza make it a method: the senses report a defective realm, and what is genuinely knowable is reached by thought. Nietzsche’s perspectivism is aimed squarely at this — his “true world” that turns out to be a fable is Plato’s.
  • The fate of the thinking subject. The soul that grasps the forms is separable from the body it is lodged in, which puts the first version of the mind-body-problem two millennia before Descartes states it in its modern form.
  • Ethics as a way of life. Virtue as knowledge, and philosophy as the practice that reorders a life — the shape stoicism later systematizes.

Cross-tradition note

The Zhu Xi / Wang Yangming dispute in neo-confucianism — is principle out in things or in the heart-mind — is recognizably the same fault line as forms-versus-mind, argued independently. The spoke records the resemblance; it holds no source claiming influence in either direction.
