Wang Yangming
Ming-dynasty philosopher and the great dissenter within neo-confucianism. Known here only through the-pattern-and-the-mind (T4), which gives his position and no biography — not even dates.
He moved li (principle) out of things and into xin, the heart-mind. Cultivation is then not the accumulation of study but the recognition of liangzhi, innate knowing — immediate moral perception one already possesses. Zhu Xi’s investigation of things becomes an unnecessary detour.
What he was willing to pay for it
The consequence he accepted is the interesting part: if principle exists only in the mind that recognizes it, no examiner can verify that anyone genuinely has it. That is a direct refusal of the institutional arrangement Zhu Xi’s account underwrote, and it is why the dispute was never academic.
The structure is familiar from this spoke’s Western corpus and the substance is not. friedrich-nietzsche also denies there is a neutral standpoint from which a claim could be checked (epistemology), but he denies it to undercut the whole apparatus of objective value; Wang denies external verification while keeping the moral order entirely intact — it has simply moved inside. Perspectivism dissolves the standard; innate knowing relocates it.
