ISO/IEC 42001

ISO/IEC 42001 is the international standard for an AI Management System (AIMS) — the management-system framework (in the ISO family, like 9001/27001) that an organization can implement and be certified against to show it governs its AI responsibly across the lifecycle. It is billed as “the world’s first AI management system standard” iso-42001-align-explainer.

Structure

Like other ISO management-system standards, 42001 is built on the Plan-Do-Check-Act backbone — six core requirement areas: leadership, planning, support, operation, performance evaluation, and continual improvement iso-42001-align-explainer. The AI-specific substance lives in its annexes:

• Annex A — a management guide for AI system development, including a list of controls;
• Annex B — implementation guidance for those controls;
• Annex C — AI-related organizational objectives and risk sources;
• Annex D — domain- and sector-specific standards.

Relationship to the EU AI Act

A-LIGN frames 42001 as a foundation for eu-ai-act compliance, but flags that it is not (yet) an approved harmonized standard for AI Act conformity — the dedicated QMS conformity standard is still pending iso-42001-align-explainer. So certification is an assurance signal, not a conformity shortcut.
