In-vehicle audio

Sound reproduction inside or on a moving vehicle — car, and in this corpus a motorcycle. It enters the spoke through audio-dsp-hardbag-guide, and it matters because it breaks an assumption every other source here relies on.

The assumption it breaks

This spoke’s thesis is that loudspeaker design is predictive: read the driver’s T/S parameters, simulate the enclosure, get the response before building anything. That works because the acoustic load is known in advance — a box you specify, a room that at least holds still.

A vehicle supplies neither. The listening space is small, hard-surfaced and asymmetric; on a motorcycle there is no enclosure at all and the noise floor rises with road speed (audio-dsp-hardbag-guide names wind noise, engine rumble and open-air acoustics). So the environment cannot be designed, and the correction layer stops being optional. audio-dsp is not the shortcut loudspeaker-primer-hackaday describes here; it is the only variable left.

What the geometry does

Two features distinguish it from a room, and they pull opposite ways.

Against you: speakers sit wherever the vehicle has space, so path lengths to the listener differ badly — the reason time alignment is standard in this field and optional in most others.

For you: the listener does not move. Sweet-spot correction is normally a compromise because someone will sit somewhere else; in a vehicle the seat position is fixed, which makes per-position alignment worth more here than anywhere else in this corpus.

What this corpus does not have

Everything above rests on one T4 retailer page and on geometry. No measurement of a vehicle’s response, no account of how correction holds up as speed changes the noise floor, and nothing on whether speed-adaptive compensation exists in real products. Car audio is a large field with its own competitive measurement culture, and this spoke holds none of it.
