Know Audio: A Loudspeaker Primer (Hackaday)

The fundamentals piece of the founding trio — Hackaday’s “Know Audio” primer on how a loudspeaker actually works, from the moving-coil driver up to the enclosure. T2: a reputable maker/engineering publication; an introductory explainer rather than a measurement study.

What it covers

  • How a driver works. A lightweight cone is suspended at its rim by a flexible surround, with a voice coil near its apex sitting in a strong magnetic field; alternating current through the coil pushes the cone back and forth, radiating sound.
  • Driver types + crossovers. Woofers (bass), tweeters (treble), and mid-range drivers split the band; an LC crossover network routes each frequency range to the right driver.
  • Why enclosures exist. A bare driver in open air sounds thin — the rear wave cancels the front (phase cancellation). The ideal fix is an infinite baffle (a wall extending forever); a sealed box is the practical approximation, and a ported box instead tunes and reuses the rear wave.
  • Cabinet construction. Boxes need mass and rigidity to avoid resonating themselves — typically MDF, often filled with acoustic wadding to kill internal reflections.
  • Where the maths comes in. Thiele/Small parameters describe a driver mathematically, letting you compute the optimal box volume for best sound.
  • The modern shortcut. Cheap drivers with DSP compensation can paper over physical design flaws digitally — the one bridge toward the software/AI-audio side (owned by ../speech-audio-wiki).
