Agentic commerce
Commerce mediated by AI agents acting on a user’s behalf — searching, comparing, and purchasing without the consumer visiting business websites. Demoed at Google I/O (Universal Cart, agentic booking) and a key driver of the ai-search-shift google-io-business-visibility.
Why it changes the game
When an agent “colonizes the whole thing, from first search query to checkout,” the website stops being the point of sale and discovery:
- Merchants own the transaction but not the discovery/intent data.
- There’s no metric for whether an agent considered a brand — only that it did or didn’t buy.
- Optimization shifts from converting human visitors to being selected by an agent, which reasons over product feeds and entity signals — see generative-engine-optimization and brand-depth-ai-recommendations.
Cross-wiki note
The agents doing this are the subject of agentic-tooling-wiki (harnesses, orchestration); here the concern is the market/visibility consequence of those agents for businesses.
