Answer Engine Optimization (AEO)
AEO is optimizing to be the answer surfaced by AI “answer engines” — the direct, synthesized responses of AI overviews, chat assistants, and voice/conversational search — rather than (or in addition to) ranking as a blue link. In practice it is used as a near-synonym / sibling of GEO; the trade press and Google treat the pair together as “AEO/GEO” — the emerging post-link discovery sub-practices.
AEO vs GEO
The terms overlap heavily and are often used interchangeably. A rough split the sources imply:
- AEO emphasizes being the answer an engine returns to a question (answer/extraction surface).
- GEO emphasizes being present in / recommended by a generative model (parametric weight + retrieval survival, brand depth).
Both are responses to the ai-search-shift — discovery moving from a ranked list of links to an AI-generated answer — and both face the same measurement-opacity problem.
Contested ownership — and Google’s own answer
Google has now addressed AEO/GEO directly in first-party Search Central guidance
(google-ai-optimization-guide, May 2026; reported secondhand in google-guidance-seo-authority).
Its position is deflationary: AI features are “rooted in our core Search ranking and quality systems”
(RAG + query fan-out), so SEO fundamentals remain the foundation and most “AEO/GEO hacks” are
mythbusted — Google states it doesn’t use llms.txt (llms-txt), content chunking isn’t needed,
AI-specific rewrites aren’t needed, and structured data isn’t required for generative-AI search.
On the tooling side, google-third-party-seo-guidance warns to be sceptical of “AEO/GEO tools” and
steers practitioners to Search Console as the only first-party signal. So the platform owner is
asserting authority over these vendor-coined practices rather than ceding them to the SEO-tools industry —
which sharpens the wiki’s standing open question: are AEO/GEO a genuinely new discipline, or
“SEO rebranded”? Google’s own answer leans toward the latter.
