Answer Engine Optimization (AEO)
AEO is optimizing to be the answer surfaced by AI “answer engines” — the direct, synthesized responses of AI overviews, chat assistants, and voice/conversational search — rather than (or in addition to) ranking as a blue link. In practice it is used as a near-synonym / sibling of GEO; the trade press and Google treat the pair together as “AEO/GEO” — the emerging post-link discovery sub-practices.
AEO vs GEO
The terms overlap heavily and are often used interchangeably. A rough split the sources imply:
- AEO emphasizes being the answer an engine returns to a question (answer/extraction surface).
- GEO emphasizes being present in / recommended by a generative model (parametric weight + retrieval survival, brand depth).
Both are responses to the ai-search-shift — discovery moving from a ranked list of links to an AI-generated answer — and both face the same measurement-opacity problem.
Contested ownership
Per google-guidance-seo-authority, Google now claims AEO/GEO fall under its official Search guidance — i.e. the platform owner asserts authority over these vendor-coined practices rather than ceding them to the SEO-tools industry. Whether AEO/GEO are a genuinely new discipline or “SEO rebranded” remains a standing open question in this wiki.
