Search Console platform properties (social & video)
Google Search Central announcement (2026-07-07, by Moshe Samet, Product Manager Lead for Search Console) introducing platform properties — a new Search Console property type that lets site owners and creators see how their social and video posts perform on Google Search and Discover, “even those without their own website.” It follows a December 2025 experiment on social channels in GSC.
What it does
You add a property for one of four platforms — Instagram, TikTok, X, YouTube — verify ownership, and then get the same class of first-party Search data GSC already gives websites, scoped to your posts:
- Performance report — total clicks, impressions, and more, filterable/sortable by individual post and by the search query that drove the traffic; exportable.
- Insights report — recent traffic trends, top-performing posts, and how people discover your account on Google.
- Achievements — growth milestones (e.g. crossing a clicks threshold from Google Search over the last 28 days).
Rolling out gradually over the coming weeks.
Why it matters to the thesis
This widens GSC’s reach as the field’s meter (google-search-console): Google now reports how your content performs on Search even when it lives on someone else’s platform, not your site. Two threads move:
- The platform owns more of the meter. The synthesis’s “the only authoritative signal is the one Google chooses to expose” now extends off-site — Instagram/TikTok/X/YouTube performance in Google Search is legible only through GSC. Google meters discovery of content it doesn’t host.
- Discovery beyond your own domain. It’s a first-party acknowledgment that audiences find creators across channels, not just via a website — the traffic-fragmentation backdrop to the ai-search-shift, handled here on the measurement side rather than the strategy side.
Still bounded by the same gap the spoke keeps flagging: it measures Search + Discover clicks/impressions, not whether an AI Overview or GEO answer considered the content.
