Announcing the Monetization Gateway (Cloudflare, 2026-07-01)

Cloudflare's product announcement for charging money at the edge: any asset behind Cloudflare — a web page, a dataset, a REST route, an MCP tool call — can be gated behind a price, with the payment handled by the network rather than by the site owner.

The mechanism

Payment runs over x402, the HTTP protocol built on the 402 Payment Required status code. The gateway holds the pricing policy, answers unpaid requests with the price, verifies proof of payment, and only then lets the request reach the origin — which also shields the origin from a spike in payment traffic. Rules are set from the dashboard, the API, or Terraform.

What it prices

The examples in the post are deliberately small and per-call: "a few cents per web search", a $0.001 base fee plus $0.01 per MB for data, $0.99 per resolved support escalation. Cloudflare is aiming at sub-cent transactions with sub-second settlement — amounts no card network will carry. Settlement is in stablecoins (USDC is named), paid peer-to-peer to the seller's wallet and redeemable for fiat.

Availability at announcement: a waitlist for Cloudflare customers, not general access.

Why it matters here

This is the difference between pay-per-crawl and a general meter. Pay per crawl charges a bot for fetching a page; the gateway charges any caller for any resource, which includes the agent-facing surfaces a site might publish on purpose — a data feed, an API, an MCP endpoint. For a small publisher the plumbing matters more than the price list: per-call billing, wallets and settlement are the reason independent sites have never metered access, and this moves all three off the site owner's plate.

Two things it does not solve. The buyer has to be willing — a protocol for charging does not create demand from AI companies who currently take the content for free — and stablecoin settlement adds a currency and a wallet to a business that previously needed neither.
