Really Simple Licensing Collective

RSL Collective

Nonprofit that publishes the RSL licensing standard and acts as a collective rights organization for web publishers dealing with AI companies — the music-publishing model applied to web content. Discovered while ingesting rsl-standard.

Co-founded by Eckart Walther, a co-creator of RSS, and Doug Leeds, former CEO of Ask.com. The founders' lineage is the tell: RSS was the last successful attempt to standardise how machines consume a site's content, and RSL reuses its distribution habit — terms declared in files crawlers already fetch.

It reports 50+ partners and roughly 1,500 endorsing media organisations. No royalty figures have been published, so the collective's bargaining record is still unmeasured.
