Ladybird

Ladybird is an independent browser built from scratch — not a fork — with its own engine (not Chromium/WebKit/Gecko), backed by a 501(c)(3) non-profit on unrestricted donations, no user monetization, no search-revenue conflict of interest. Tier T2 (first-party project site, concrete and technical). It grew out of SerenityOS (Andreas Kling) and now uses Rust alongside C++; an alpha targeting Linux and macOS is planned for 2026 (Windows/mobile later).

Ladybird is the roster’s most important counter-note: it chases neither AI nor a business model, only web-standards independence. It’s the one entrant attacking the deeper problem the AI race ignores — the Chromium/WebKit engine duopoly (nearly every other browser here, AI or privacy, is Chromium or WebKit under the hood). So while the browser wars look like an AI contest on the surface, Ladybird reframes part of the fight as engine diversity — the open question the synthesis flags on whether an AI-browser boom entrenches the monoculture or funds alternatives.
