Message template
The pre-approved message format a business must use to initiate contact on the WhatsApp Business Platform. Templates are the platform’s central gatekeeping mechanism: WhatsApp does not permit unsolicited free-form business messages, so any business-initiated message runs through a template that Meta has reviewed and approved.
Categories
Per whatsapp-business-platform-docs, templates are sorted into categories that drive both policy and (increasingly) pricing:
- Marketing — promotions, offers, announcements.
- Utility — transaction/account updates tied to a specific action (receipts, shipping).
- Authentication — one-time passcodes and login flows (one-tap / zero-tap / copy-code variants).
- Service — free-form replies inside a customer-initiated conversation window (not a pre-approved template in the same sense).
Why it matters
The template/approval gate is the constraint integrators design around — it is the reason WhatsApp integration is non-trivial enough to sustain the SDK (wapi-go) and BSP layers. Category definitions and their pricing have changed repeatedly, so any specifics are a dated snapshot.
Category is now the billing unit (added 2026-07-30)
Since per-message-pricing replaced conversation-based billing on 1 July 2025, the category a template is filed under decides what it costs, not just what it is allowed to say whatsapp-pricing-docs:
- Marketing — always billable.
- Utility — free inside an open customer-service-window, billable outside it, and volume-tier discounted.
- Authentication — billable outside the window, volume-tier discounted.
Approval and billing are therefore the same lever pulled twice. A template’s category determines whether Meta will approve the content and what the business pays to deliver it, which makes categorization a commercial decision as much as a compliance one.
The gate exists on the other channels too
Template pre-approval is WhatsApp’s particular mechanism, not a universal one. The other channels in this wiki reach a comparable place differently: apple-messages-for-business reviews the whole conversation experience up front rather than each message apple-messages-for-business-docs, and rcs-business-messaging gates the agent at launch rcs-brand-verification. See sender-verification for the comparison.
