Edge retires "Copilot Mode," folds it into the browser

The Microsoft Edge Blog, 2026-05-13 — first-party, closing the other half of growth edge 6 ("the incumbents as browsers, not as AI features" named Edge as unsourced alongside Safari).

What changed

Copilot Mode launched in July 2025 as an opt-in experiment for Edge on Windows and Mac. The 2026-05-13 post retires the separate mode and moves its features into Edge itself, on desktop and, for the first time, the Edge mobile app: "we're retiring Copilot Mode" now that the features it offered are built directly in, making it "simpler to shape how you browse and get more done." Existing Copilot Mode users keep priority access to new features through a Copilot in Edge Preview toggle in Settings.

Features moving in: multi-tab reasoning (into the address bar and a compact floating panel, rolling out to Stable from June 2026), screen-aware voice assistance, Journeys (now broadly available), a redesigned new-tab page, quizzes, podcasts, and writing help.

Not a retreat — a redistribution

Coverage from gHacks and WindowsForum reads this the same way: the branding is gone, the AI is not — it is spread across the ordinary browsing surface instead of living behind an opt-in mode. A later review notes Microsoft now treats tab context, browsing-history access, and long-term memory as separate Copilot capabilities, each with its own on/off switch, rather than one bundled mode.

Model backend, not just UI

Edge's Copilot runs on OpenAI's GPT models and, since June 2026, offers Claude for Microsoft 365 Copilot subscribers — a model choice made at the plan level, not switched in the browser itself.

Where this sits on the spoke's axes

Multi-tab reasoning with permission ("with permission, can reason across open tabs to compare details and answer questions using browsing context") is assistant-pole, the same restrained shape as gemini-in-chrome and safari-apple-intelligence. The distribution point matters more than the feature list: Edge reached 13.7% desktop share, a reported new high, entirely on the strength of being preinstalled on Windows — the same lever growth edge 4 named and the spoke had no source for until now.
