Perplexity Comet

Comet is Perplexity's AI browser — "the browser that works for you," a personal AI assistant wrapped around web browsing (Mac, Windows, iOS, Android). Tier T3 (first-party product/marketing landing page). It is the spoke's clearest agentic-pole browser: where Gemini in Chrome gates before acting, Comet's entire pitch is delegation — "discover everything that can be delegated."

What it does

The landing page frames Comet as a set of "AI that ___" capabilities, each a delegated task rather than a query:

  • understands — compare how different outlets cover a story;
  • builds — "build a basic website for me" (a "Comet Assistant" runs, with a Pause control);
  • emails — draft a reply that shares your schedule;
  • creates — turn a syllabus into a week-long study plan;
  • shops — "buy a high quality, comfortable yet cheap office chair."

Its own framing: everything that can be delegated — wrangling inboxes, ordering groceries, managing finances, planning vacations. Per browser-wars-2026 it sits at the premium end (a $200/mo Max tier).

Why it's here — the agentic pole, concretely

Comet is the fullest expression of ai-browser's agentic pole: the browser as a surface where an assistant acts to complete multi-step tasks (buy the chair, build the site, clear the inbox), not just answer. Two things worth tracking as sources deepen:

  • The "Comet Assistant" runs with a Pause button — the UI admits the agent needs an interrupt, the browser-side echo of agentic-tooling-wiki's reversibility/human-checkpoint discipline (the irreversible actions — buying, sending — are exactly where autonomy is riskiest).
  • Shopping/finance delegation puts money-moving actions behind the agent, the sharpest test of the assistant-vs-agent trust question the synthesis flags — and a live seam to ../search-marketing-wiki's agentic-commerce thread (an agent that buys on your behalf).

The paywall came off, and that is a correction

Re-checked 2026-09-03 (stale-queue refresh). The sentence above — "Per browser-wars-2026 it sits at the premium end (a $200/mo Max tier)" — was true at ingest and is not true now. Comet launched in July 2025 behind the $200/month Max plan and went free in October 2025; the free mobile apps followed, Android on 2025-11-20 and iOS on 2026-03-18. The free build keeps the headline features: agentic search, page summarization, voice mode, shopping and Deep Research. What still costs $200 is Background Assistants — tasks that run unattended — and a $5/month Comet Plus add-on buys publisher content inside answers, bundled into Pro and Max.

Sources for this correction are secondary pricing round-ups (T4), not Perplexity's own page: perplexity.ai/comet returns 403 to automated fetch, as it did at ingest. So the direction is well attested and the individual figures should be treated as unconfirmed until a first-party page is read.

Why the change matters more than the number. The delegation pitch quoted above is unchanged; what moved is who pays for it. Free agentic browsing at the assistant tier, with only unattended work behind the paywall, draws the price line at supervision rather than at capability — which is the same line Aside draws with its approval prompts and Atlas drew with agent mode, priced from the opposite side.
