ChatGPT Atlas
ChatGPT Atlas is OpenAI's AI browser (announced 21 Oct 2025), built to challenge Chrome as the default way people search. Tier T3 (TechCrunch launch coverage). Its core is a ChatGPT sidecar that automatically has the current page as context — you chat with the page and its search results, no copy-paste — plus an agent mode that completes web tasks for you. Browser history personalizes ChatGPT's answers.
On ai-browser's assistant ↔ agent axis it spans both: the sidecar is assistant, agent mode is agentic. Its pricing splits along that line — free for the assistant/sidecar, agent mode gated to Plus/Pro/Business. macOS first, then Windows/iOS/Android. The launch article flags the live caveat the whole agentic pole shares: early agents "struggle to reliably automate the more cumbersome problems" — a candid note that autonomy is the promise, reliability the open question (synthesis).

Re-checked 2026-09-03 (stale-queue refresh); everything above describes a product that no longer exists, and is kept as written because the argument it fed is still in the spine. Atlas shut down on 9 August 2026, ten months after launch. It never left macOS: the Windows, iOS and Android builds promised at announcement never shipped, not even as betas. In March 2026 OpenAI said it would fold Atlas, the ChatGPT desktop app and Codex into a single desktop application, and the browser's agentic capabilities moved there rather than being discontinued outright. What that costs the page above. The pricing split — free sidecar, agent mode gated to Plus/Pro/ Business — was accurate and is now historical. The cross-platform claim was never true. The one sentence that survives intact is the launch article's caveat that early agents "struggle to reliably automate the more cumbersome problems", and it reads differently now: the most heavily resourced entrant in the ai-browser agentic pole withdrew the browser and kept the agent.
What it means for the spoke. synthesis's organizing axis is assistant ↔ agent, and the first big test of whether the browser is the right container for the agent has come back negative from the company with the most to gain from a yes. That is one data point, not a verdict — perplexity-comet and opera-neon are both still shipping — but it is the only one so far where a vendor tried and stopped.
