The professional society of information-science, founded in 1937 as the American Documentation Institute and renamed in 1968 — the rename that put information in place of documentation in the field's own name information-science-wikipedia.

The society issued the definition (Borko's, 1968) that the discipline still works from, which makes the rename and the definition one event: the field named itself and stated its scope in the same year.

Naming caveat. The Wikipedia entry gives the current form, Association for Information Science and Technology, alongside the 1968 date. The "and Technology" came later, so 1968 should be read as the date of the rename, not as the date the present name was adopted. Recorded here rather than silently corrected — the corpus holds no source for the later change.
