Paul Otlet

Belgian lawyer and bibliographer; with Henri La Fontaine he founded the International Institute of Bibliography in 1895 and laid the theoretical groundwork for modern information-science information-science-wikipedia.

What he did

  • Designed the Universal Decimal Classification, still in use, which extends Dewey with operators for combining subjects — a document is placed by a composed expression rather than dropped in one category.
  • Described networked access to knowledge: links between documents, search, retrieval from a distance. The encyclopedia entry calls this prescient, and dates it decades ahead of the internet.
  • Made the documentation-movement an institution rather than a private practice.

Standing in this wiki

Otlet is the corpus's missing ancestor. vannevar-bush is paged here as the origin of mechanized personal knowledge (memex, associative-trails, 1945); Otlet was designing the same capability — linked documents, remote query — from 1895, at universal rather than personal scale. Neither this wiki nor the memex literature it draws on had him until now.

Thin node. Everything above comes from one encyclopedic summary. The corpus holds nothing he wrote, no date of birth or death, and no account of what became of the institute. A primary source (his Traité de documentation, or a history of the Mundaneum) would be the obvious way to close that.
