Halim Qarroum’s curated catalog of the Internet of Things: ~4.2k★ / 507 forks, CC0 (public domain), covering hardware boards, embedded operating systems, languages, frameworks, middleware, tools, the full protocol stack, standards bodies, and a reading list.

It is the trigger source of this spoke, and it earned that role by being the thing three previously-parked hardware strays were missing: a map showing that an MCU datasheet, an edge SBC, and a DIY device are three layers of one field rather than three unrelated gadgets.

How it divides the field

The taxonomy is the useful part, because it’s a claim about what the field is made of:

  • Hardware — boards from bare microcontroller (ESP32, Raspberry Pi Pico, Arduino) up through Linux-capable single-board computers (Raspberry Pi, BeagleBoard, ODROID, OLinuXino, HummingBoard), plus modular/industrial systems (WisBlock for LPWAN, the DIN-rail ESP32-based HomeMaster).
  • Software — embedded operating systems (Zephyr, FreeRTOS, ARM mbed, Contiki, Apache Mynewt), languages (Python, Rust, TinyGo), frameworks (Home Assistant, Eclipse Ditto, Blynk), middleware (EMQX, ThingsBoard), and tools (Node-RED, MQTT Explorer).
  • Protocols and networks, split by layer — physical (802.15.4, Bluetooth/BLE, LoRaWAN, NB-IoT, Sigfox, Wi-Fi, EC-GSM-IoT), network/transport (6LoWPAN, Thread, ZigBee, Z-Wave), and application (MQTT, CoAP, DTLS, HTTP, WebSocket, XMPP, STOMP, iBeacon, Eddystone).
  • Technologies and standards — NFC, OPC-UA, and the alliance layer (LoRa Alliance, Bluetooth SIG, Thread Group, Zigbee Alliance) that governs the protocols.
  • Resources — books and papers, several of them on IoT security.

It accretes rather than prunes

Worth knowing before treating it as current. Entries added recently (HomeMaster, AutoPi, PiSpot, Rinho telematics) sit beside things that have been dead for years: Intel Galileo was discontinued in 2017, Pinoccio and Tessel are dormant, Contiki has largely given way to Contiki-NG. Nothing marks which is which. That makes the list a decent archaeology of IoT hardware from roughly 2015 to now and an unreliable guide to what to buy today — the standard failure mode of a long-lived awesome list, and the same caveat this hub recorded for awesome-systematic-trading in ../quant-trading-wiki.

Re-checked 2026-08-05

The source arrived again through the hub and the page was refreshed rather than duplicated. Two things moved since 2026-07-27: ~4.2k → ~4.4k★, 507 → 520 forks, and GitHub now reports the license as MIT where this page recorded CC0. Both readings are kept per the record-don’t- overwrite rule; the discrepancy is unresolved and probably means the repository’s stated licence changed or the earlier reading was of a licence file GitHub no longer detects. Nothing about the taxonomy or the accretion problem changed.

Tier

T3 — a community link catalog. No evaluation, no benchmarks, no maintenance signal per entry. Its value here is coverage and page candidates: the protocol stack, the RTOS layer, and the alliance/standards structure are all named, and none of them has a page yet.
