Fabless silicon vendor behind the ESP32 family and the ESP8266 before it — the parts a large share of the DIY and IoT hardware in this wiki runs on. Its product line has since branched by architecture and role (ESP32-S2/S3, and the RISC-V C2/C3/C5/C6/H2/P4), with ESP-IDF as the first-party development framework. Discovered while ingesting the ESP32 datasheet.
The branch is one-directional, which the esp32 page now records from Wikipedia (T2): Xtensa stops at the S-series, and every part Espressif has introduced since is RISC-V, up to and including the 360 MHz P4. For a fabless vendor that is a bet placed once and paid for across the whole line.
Worth one structural note beside raspberry-pi: both sell into the same maker market and document different things. Espressif publishes silicon documents — CoreMark scores, security blocks, errata, and part-lifecycle status down to NRND and EOL flags. That is a chip vendor writing for someone who has to keep shipping a product.
