cbwhickstein‘s attempt to rebuild a Flipper Zero from the manufacturer’s published schematic — and its own author’s account of why he stopped. 96 stars, 16 forks, 19 commits, no licence stated. Described in the README as “A NOT FINISHED Flipper Zero Clone.” T1 as an official project repo, and a thin one: no build instructions, no parts list in the visible README, no firmware to speak of.

It is here for the negative result, which is worth more than the code.

What happened

The author worked from the vendor’s open schematic toward a custom PCB, priced fabrication and assembly at JLCPCB, and abandoned it:

“After almost recreating the whole schematic… I checked the pricing for parts and because of the form factor and factory assambling the price of creating a DIY Flipper would exeed the price of a bought one.”

Roughly $220 by his estimate, against simply buying the device.

Why this is the useful half of a pair

Read against flopperziro, ingested the same day, these are two attempts at the same substitution that took opposite routes and got opposite answers:

The variable that decided it is form factor, and its author says so. Matching the shape of the commercial device means a custom board and factory assembly, and those costs do not fall with volume of one. Accept a bigger, uglier object and the price argument returns.

So the open-hardware substitution motive has a stated boundary condition: it works at the breakout-board rung and inverts at the custom-PCB rung. What the commercial product is actually selling is integration — and integration is the one thing a one-off build cannot buy cheaply.

What it does not establish

One person’s quote for one board at one fab, undated, with no BOM published to check it against. The $220 is an anecdote, not a costing. That it stopped the project is the durable fact; the number is indicative.
