AudioNodes — a free modular synthesizer that is also a DAW
BPB (Tomislav Zlatic, 2026-09-10) on AudioNodes, from AudioNodes LLC: a node-based patching environment and a multitrack DAW in one program, on macOS, Windows, Linux and in the browser. Version 0.14.3 (2026-09-08), and the developer calls it alpha. Zlatic's line is that it is "already pretty epic" for how much it does at that label.
What is in it
- Nodes: oscillators, noise, filters, envelopes, AM/FM; a sampler that loads audio and builds instruments; piano roll, sequencers, audio and MIDI recording; analysers and maths utilities; effects. Everything is wired with virtual cables — modular-routing with no fixed signal path.
- DAW: a multitrack timeline holding audio, MIDI and automation clips; trim, slice, arrange, mix; render the project. Snippets save a patch fragment for reuse — the same move as Reason's Combinator (reason) and a VCV preset (vcv-rack).
- Plugins (desktop only): 64-bit VST3, and VST 2.4 on Windows, each hosted in its own process so a crashing plugin does not take the project down.
The price
| Free | AudioNodes HD | |
|---|---|---|
| price | $0 | $9.99 / month or $99.99 / year |
| nodes, tracks | unlimited | unlimited |
| render | stereo, up to 48 kHz | up to 96 kHz, 7.1 |
| extras | commercial use allowed | custom nodes, polyphonic subpatches, multi-screen, markers |
HD features lock again if the subscription lapses. The free tier is not a demo — everything the review describes as the instrument is in it; the paid tier sells rendering headroom and convenience.
Where it sits in the spoke
The daw node sorts DAWs by layout — Cubase's tracks and mixer, reason's rack, renoise's tracker grid. AudioNodes is a fourth: a node graph that is the whole instrument and the studio, with the timeline bolted beside it. It is closer to vcv-rack than to any DAW here, but VCV is a rack you host in a DAW, and this makes the rack the DAW. It is also the spoke's first production tool that runs in a web browser, which the source mentions and does not explain — whether the browser build is Web Audio, WebAssembly, or a thin client is not stated, nor is what the browser version cannot do.
T2: a named practitioner's hands-on write-up on a recurring source; the feature list and prices are the vendor's, quoted, and an alpha's prices and limits will move. No measurements, no comparison against another DAW — the review describes, it does not test.
A narrower cousin arrived 2026-10-07: thicket is also node-based and free, but its 50 nodes build one fixed polyphonic instrument rather than an open DAW-and-rack.
