designboom on Orphea

designboom's write-up of Orphea, the pocket electronic piano from Pianni and Jordan Daniels. It is a design-showcase piece: the writer describes the object and its design intent, quotes no price, no date, no measurement and no engine, and does not say they played it. The one experiential claim, that the keyboard holds up under "complex Bach fugues", is reported, not tested.

What it says

  • 13 physical black-and-white keys, one chromatic octave C to C, with dedicated octave controls that "extend the playable pitch range without increasing the instrument's footprint".
  • Polyphonic; built-in speakers, headphone output, MIDI connectivity, USB-C charging.
  • "Measures only slightly larger than a modern smartphone"; moulded plastic enclosure "balancing weight and durability".
  • Framed as "a portable musical sketchbook" — travel, outdoors, desk, practice — explicitly not a replacement for a full piano.
  • The design "examines how far a conventional keyboard can be reduced while retaining its physical and musical functions", after iterations on key feel, enclosure geometry, electronics and speaker placement.
  • Preparing to launch on Kickstarter.

What it leaves out

Everything a buyer would decide on: no sound engine described at all (samples? modelling? which piano?), no voice count, no battery life, no dimensions or weight, no MIDI transport (DIN / USB / Bluetooth), no price, no date. The same hole this spoke recorded on md-7-pocket-synthesizer: a pocket instrument announced without saying what makes the sound.

Why it is T3

A design magazine relaying a maker's own material about an unreleased product, with no hands-on and no independent measurement. Under the tiering rule in ../QUALITY.md this is the same grade the spoke gives synth-anatomy's spec-relay pieces, and for the same reason: the page rests on what the maker said.

It is also this spoke's first source from the industrial-design press rather than the music-gear press — which shows in what it chose to describe (enclosure, key feel, footprint) and what it skipped (the engine).
