Analytical psychology
Jung’s school, founded in his break from Freud. It keeps the unconscious as the engine of mental life and rejects the claim that its contents are purely personal and biographical: alongside the individual unconscious sits a collective unconscious, shared structure inherited rather than acquired, expressed in symbols that recur across cultures with no contact between them.
What the founding source shows it doing
Applied to creativity, the tradition produces claims no experimental programme would generate jung-on-creativity: art arrives from the unconscious; the artist is an instrument rather than an author; and there are two modes, the psychological working ordinary emotion and the visionary reaching primordial material — the second drawing on collective rather than personal depths, which is why such work reads as “a message to generations.” Jung’s paradox for the artist, that the gift costs personal happiness, follows from the same picture: if the work has the agency, the person hosting it is not in charge of the terms.
Method is the boundary
This is a clinical and interpretive tradition. Its evidence is consulting-room observation, dreams, myth, comparative religion and a reading of literature. That produces claims which are genuinely rich and, in the strict sense, largely untestable — most sharply the inherited-symbol claim, which the method cannot distinguish from culturally transmitted material.
Two consequences for this wiki. It sits at the opposite pole from the
psychophysics end of the founding corpus, which is what makes the pair
useful: same subject, incompatible standards of evidence (synthesis). And it marks the seam with
../philosophy-wiki — Jung read Kant, Schopenhauer and Nietzsche, and the collective unconscious is
a metaphysics-of-mind claim, so cross-link the philosophy, keep the psychiatry here.
