Humans and mice build similar perceptual maps (MedicalXpress)

MedicalXpress reporting a psychophysics study by Seiler and Rumpel (Johannes Gutenberg University Mainz, Communications Psychology, 2026): humans and mice form remarkably similar internal perceptual maps of the same pulsed-sound sequences, despite auditory hardware that differs substantially. The two results that matter

Cross-species similarity. Two very different auditory systems arrive at comparable internal structure for the same stimuli, which argues that the structure lives in the world, not only in the brain doing the listening. Regularities in the sound itself constrain what any mammalian perceiver can build.

Stability through learning. The maps stayed stable before, during and after training. So learning here refines an existing perceptual structure rather than rebuilding one — a claim about what learning does, not just that it happens.

Why it anchors this spoke

It is the founding corpus’s only experiment, and the only source where a claim about minds comes with a method, a species comparison and a peer-reviewed venue. It also supplies the concrete version of the thesis in synthesis: a perceiver runs a model it did not choose and cannot inspect, which is Kahneman and Jung‘s shared premise arriving from the laboratory instead of the clinic or the survey.

Whether an internal perceptual map deserves to be called a world model — the phrase the coverage reaches for — is worth holding lightly. It’s the same term AI research uses for something quite different, and the overlap is a metaphor until someone shows otherwise.
