Steven C. Hayes

Clinical psychologist, Nevada Foundation Professor at the University of Nevada, Reno, teaching in its behaviour-analysis PhD programme. Co-developer of acceptance-and-commitment-therapy and author of Relational Frame Theory, his account of human higher cognition (roughly 300 studies testing its concepts). a-liberated-mind (2019) is his book for general readers.

Hayes is the spoke’s only figure who built both a theory of cognition and the clinical programme that applies it, then subjected the programme to trials — over 900 randomized controlled trials of ACT, with WHO, APA and US Department of Veterans Affairs recognition. That combination is what makes him the counterexample to this wiki’s founding assumption about clinical psychology’s testability (synthesis).
