James Hollis
Zurich-trained Jungian analyst and author, working in the analytical-psychology tradition. His The Middle Passage (Inner City Books, 1993) appeared in the Studies in Jungian Psychology by Jungian Analysts series and is the corpus’s entry for him.
His subject is the second half of life. Hollis argues that the personality assembled during first adulthood is provisional — built reflexively out of family conditioning and childhood coping — and that the distress arriving at midlife is the authentic self pressing against it. He treats that distress as an invitation rather than a disorder: “a powerful imperative for renewal.”
Doctrinally he is downstream of carl-jung — withdrawing projections, confronting complexes, integrating unconscious material — applied to one life stage.
