George M. Bergman

Algebraist at uc-berkeley, author of bergman-invitation-general-algebra — the Math 245 notes he began around 1971 and revised on every teaching for the next forty-four years, published by springer in 2015. Discovered while ingesting bergman-invitation-general-algebra.

He credits Mac Lane for his own category theory, Cohn for his first systematic exposure to general algebra, and Freyd's paper for the result he calls the climax of the course. The notes acknowledge students by name for corrections "over the years", and an earlier version was prepared in a locally enhanced troff before the LaTeX conversion — a detail that dates the project as much as the 1971 start does.
