Lawrence Baggett

Professor emeritus of mathematics at university-of-colorado-boulder and the author of baggett-analysis-single-variable. Discovered while ingesting that book.

His research is in harmonic analysis, wavelet theory and unitary representations of groups — not the subject of the textbook, which is an undergraduate-to-first-year-graduate analysis course. A Birkhäuser volume, Representations, Wavelets, and Frames: A Celebration of the Mathematical Work of Lawrence W. Baggett (2008), came out of a conference held in Boulder in May 2006, months before the textbook's October 2006 date.

He is blind, having lost his sight at five in an accident with a paring knife, and he wrote about it in In the Dark on the Sunny Side: A Memoir of an Out-of-Sight Mathematician (Mathematical Association of America, 2012). He was the first blind student in Orlando's public schools, the first admitted to Davidson College, and the first accepted as a doctoral mathematics student at the University of Washington. That biography is not in the textbook and is not evidence about it; it is recorded here because the person node is where it belongs, and because a book whose preface insists on knowing "what the relevant words themselves really mean" was written by someone who worked without being able to look at the page.

He belongs to the pattern this corpus keeps finding: a research mathematician who put a complete course on a faculty web server and left it there. william-trench, jim-hefferon, h-jerome-keisler and thomas-judson did the same, with more maintenance than this one has had — the Baggett PDF is dated 2006 and appears never to have been revised.
