Anna Lembke
Born 1967. Psychiatrist specialising in addiction medicine; professor at Stanford and medical director of its addiction medicine programme. Yale BA (1989), Stanford MD (1995), psychiatry residency completed there in 1998. Over 100 professional papers, and expert testimony to legislators.
Two books. Drug Dealer, MD (2016) examined how physicians helped drive the opioid epidemic. dopamine-nation (2021) became a New York Times bestseller and put "dopamine fasting" into general circulation.
She is this spoke's clearest case of a single person occupying both ends of its evidence problem. The credentials are not in question and the peer-reviewed record is substantial; the trade book drew sustained criticism from neuroscientists and addiction specialists for compressing that literature past what it supports, and Lembke publicly conceded one of the central simplifications — that attributing addiction solely to dopamine goes too far — in the New York Times.
Useful contrast with daniel-kahneman, who also walked back a claim publicly (his confidence in social priming, after the replication failures). Kahneman was conceding that findings he had relied on did not hold. Lembke was conceding that her own framing overstated a literature that does hold. Different failures, same lesson about how far a popular book can travel from the work under it.
Added 2026-08-23. The spoke now holds the peer-reviewed literature she was compressing (lewis-borrelli-reward-2021), and the comparison is unkind in a precise way rather than a general one. The concession she made in a newspaper — addiction is not caused by dopamine alone — appears in the review chapter's first paragraph as ordinary practice. She did not get the science wrong; she dropped a qualification that specialists keep by default, and only put it back under pressure. Contrast emiliana-borrelli, who writes for the same year and the same subject with the qualification in place and no trade book to sell.
