Godot Foundation

The non-profit that stewards the Godot Engine source code and the Godot trademarks, and allocates funding and contractor work toward the engine’s development. It is the body that authored and published the Vision Statement (2026), which it uses to “guide … decisions about funding allocation, contractor work, and the long-term direction of the engine” and to set priorities. Its Board decided to formalize the long-held vision in writing as the contributor pool grew past the point where the vision could be learned by working alongside maintainers.

It governs contribution intake as well as direction: the 2026 contribution policy (30 June 2026) restricts AI-generated code (bans autonomous agents / “vibe coding,” requires human authorship + disclosure) and gates new contributors, citing reviewer burnout and lost mentorship value — the same “write down what was tacit, now that we’re too big to learn it by osmosis” move as the Vision Statement, applied to the rules for getting code merged.

This is the governance/stewardship layer behind Godot’s free-and-open-source pole — the counterpart to the commercial vendors elsewhere in this wiki (epic-games for unreal-engine, unity-technologies for unity-engine), but a non-profit steward of a community project rather than a company that owns a product.
