Curtis McMullen

Mathematician in the Harvard department of mathematics (harvard-university), and the author of mcmullen-probability-theory — the 2011 course notes, revised 2021, that this spoke was created around. Discovered while ingesting them.

The notes are hosted on his own university page in a directory of teaching material, which is what makes them a primary source rather than a transcription.

Not from the ingested source: his research is in dynamics, geometry and Teichmüller theory, and he received the Fields Medal in 1998. Neither fact appears in the notes; both bear on why a first-course probability text reaches for the transitive action of a symmetric group to explain a binomial coefficient.
