Martin J. Osborne
Economist, co-author of osborne-rubinstein-course-in-game-theory. At the time of writing he was in the Department of Economics at mcmaster-university in Hamilton, Ontario; he later moved to the University of Toronto. He completed his work on the book during a visit to the University of Canterbury, New Zealand, with support from Canada’s SSHRC and NSERC.
He was, by his own account, taught game theory at Stanford by Robert Aumann, Sergiu Hart, Mordecai Kurz and Robert Wilson — a lineage worth noting, since Aumann’s work on common knowledge is the basis of the book’s Chapter 5.
In the preface’s signed disagreement over generic pronouns, Osborne is the one arguing that no language is neutral and that “he” was imposed by prescriptive grammarians rather than arising naturally.
