Thomas W. Judson

Mathematician at stephen-f-austin-state-university and author of judson-abstract-algebra, which he has kept free under the GNU Free Documentation License since 1997 and maintained for nearly three decades — the HTML edition was still being revised in 2025. Discovered while ingesting that book.

He belongs to the corpus’s small group of authors who chose free licences and then stayed with the book: jim-hefferon (four editions since 1996), h-jerome-keisler (free for 24 years, including through a Dover printing), william-trench (reissued once the rights reverted). Sustained maintenance, not just an initial upload, is what separates these texts from a PDF someone posted.
