Springer Undergraduate Mathematics Series

SUMS (ISSN 1615-2085, electronic 2197-4144) — springer‘s undergraduate mathematics line, and the spoke’s second series node after infosys-science-foundation-series. It carries carroll-geometric-function-theory; editor-in-chief Endre Süli (Oxford), with series editors at St Andrews, Edinburgh, London, Leicester and Cambridge.

Its stated design is worth recording because it is a pedagogical specification imposed by a publisher rather than chosen by an author: books span “core foundational material to final year topics”, support explanations with “a wealth of examples, problems and fully-worked solutions”, pay “particular attention… to universal areas of difficulty”, and are sized for “a one- or two-semester course” while remaining “ideal for independent use” through self-study.

Two of those constraints are visible in the one volume held here. The fully-worked solutions are 54 pages of it, and the self-study target explains why a book on a research-adjacent subject carries them at all. The series also supplies its own prerequisite: Carroll points readers needing a first course to Howie’s Complex Analysis in the same line.
