H. Jerome Keisler
Mathematician at the university-of-wisconsin-madison and the author of keisler-elementary-calculus (1976, second edition 1986, free online since 2002). Discovered while ingesting that book.
The book’s own pages establish the working life behind it: he taught an early draft as a one-semester course at Wisconsin in 1969, published a two-semester experimental version in 1971, revised for the second edition on “nine years of classroom experience,” wrote a companion instructor volume (Foundations of Infinitesimal Calculus), and dedicated the result to his three sons. Copyright reverted to him when the second edition went out of print, and he has kept the full text free ever since — including through the 2012 Dover edition, which he agreed to on condition the online version stayed up.
Not from the ingested source: his research field is mathematical logic and model theory, which is where Abraham Robinson’s nonstandard analysis comes from. That is the connection the textbook deliberately hides — Keisler strips the logic out of the presentation and keeps it in the instructor’s volume.
