Cubase

Cubase is Steinberg’s digital audio workstation, one of the long-standing mainstream DAWs (alongside Logic Pro, Ableton Live, and Pro Tools). It appears in this spoke as the yardstick in the MusicTech review of Reason 14: the reviewer Hollin Jones is a Cubase user, and reads Reason against what Cubase carries.

The review pins the comparison to Cubase Artist (£273) — the mid-tier edition, priced close to Reason+ (£299) — and uses it to mark the features a full-depth DAW has that Reason does not: tuned pitch/time audio editing (VariAudio), VCA faders, deeper MIDI editing and browser, video playback, notation, surround / Dolby Atmos, and iOS controller support. That list is what makes Cubase useful here — not as a subject in its own right yet, but as the depth ceiling the daw node measures against. Steinberg is also the originator of the VST plugin format that both DAWs host.
