VCV Rack

VCV Rack is an open-source virtual modular synthesizer — a software rack you fill with modules and wire together with patch cables, modelled on the Eurorack hardware format. Its engine is GPLv3, and it hosts third-party module packages from many developers, including software versions of modules from real Eurorack makers (Bogaudio, Valley, Befaco are among those RackDroid can sideload; Befaco is a hardware Eurorack manufacturer). Version 2 is current; RackDroid vendors v2.6.4.

The wiki reaches it through RackDroid, an Android port, so what’s recorded here is what that source establishes. A first-party source on Rack itself would be the obvious next thing to page.

Why it’s the spoke’s modular entry point

modular-routing argues that an instrument’s character comes from how its blocks are wired rather than from the blocks themselves, and the page tracks that idea through five forms — parallel filters (filtopia), composed voices (polyuanalog), a software patch matrix (shinronin), a hardware pin matrix (cyma-forma-alt), and routing with no instrument attached (mixer, korg-nts-4). Each exposes routing inside a bounded device.

VCV Rack removes the bound. There is no fixed set of blocks and no fixed signal path: modules come from anywhere, audio and CV are the same kind of cable, and the patch is the instrument. That’s the Eurorack model proper, and it makes Rack the strongest instance of the routing thesis in the spoke — stronger than Reason, which uses the rack as an interface metaphor over a fixed catalogue of first-party devices. Reason looks like a rack; Rack is one.

Software modular vs hardware modular

The obvious objection from the spoke’s analog-vs-digital thread is that a virtual rack has no analog signal path, so whatever the analog-purist position claims for hardware (filtopia, music-from-test-equipment) it can’t claim here. That’s true and unresolved — but it separates two things the corpus has been treating together. Modularity is an architectural property (open routing, mixed sources, CV as a first-class signal); analog is a signal-path property. Rack keeps the first and drops the second, which makes it a useful control on the question: whatever people value in modular that survives here wasn’t coming from the circuits.

The economics separate too. A Eurorack case of comparable module count costs thousands; Rack is free, and RackDroid puts it on a phone. Where the spoke’s boutique instruments differentiate on build, panel, and scarcity, a virtual rack competes on the size and quality of its module ecosystem.
