Mixer
A mixer combines multiple audio signals into a common output, setting each source’s level (and often its routing, effects sends, and monitoring) — the hub through which a multi-instrument setup reaches the speakers or the recorder. Unlike the spoke’s other gear classes it makes no sound of its own; its whole value is signal flow, which makes it the purest expression of the routing-is-the-character through-line — here the routing isn’t a feature of an instrument, it is the instrument.
Performance mixer vs summing box
The distinction the founding instance draws: a plain mixer just sums and levels, but a performance mixer adds live-control features that make it an instrument you play during a set. Korg’s NTS-4 is the spoke’s first example — per-channel CUE (pre-listen on headphones before a channel enters the main mix) and MUTE (instant cut) let a performer set up transitions the audience can’t hear, and two built-in FX engines (per-channel sends + a master bus processor) fold effect processing into the mixer itself. So the mixer sits next to the midi-controller on the “control surface, not sound source” side of the spoke, but it’s in the audio path rather than the MIDI path.
Where it grows
A mixer is also the natural integration hub for a hybrid rig — the NTS-4’s Eurorack-level inputs make it the point where modular, desktop synths, and computer audio meet. That puts the class close to the spoke’s flagged Eurorack edge and to modular-routing‘s signal-flow thesis.
