Granular synthesis
A digital synthesis method that chops recorded audio into tiny fragments (“grains,” typically a few to a few hundred milliseconds) and plays them back in clouds — scattering their timing, pitch, pan, and position to build textures, drones, and time-stretched sound from a source sample. Because it works on thousands of grains in real time, it is inherently a DSP / digital technique, not an analog one.
Why it matters here
It is the spoke’s first non-subtractive, non-analog synthesis method, and it anchors the digital pole of the analog-vs-digital argument with an actual instrument rather than a plugin. gr-mega is the worked example: up to 5,000 grains across four layers, with a spectral phase vocoder alongside the granular engines, and “spray” controls (pan/pitch/patch) that expose the defining move of the technique — controlled randomness over grain parameters. That spray idiom also appears in the glitch effect beast-repeat, suggesting randomized-scatter control is a cross-method motif, not specific to granular.
Adjacent methods
The GR-MEGA bundles granular with sampling, tape mode, granular slice, and a spectral phase vocoder — a reminder that “granular” sits within a family of sample-mangling engines, and that a modern digital instrument usually ships several. Time-stretch/pitch-shift resynthesis (also in beast-repeat‘s FFT and phase-vocoder modes) is the shared DSP substrate.
Granular as an effect, not just an instrument
Where GR-MEGA is a granular instrument, Xnullx‘s free plugins show granular as a processor in two shapes: Grainbrain runs the grain engine per frequency band (split first, then granulate each band independently), and Halide uses a grain cloud plus spectral smear with a freeze function and 16-second rolling buffer to blur audio into ambient layers. Both pair granular with a spectral/multiband stage rather than treating the whole signal as one grain source — the technique maturing from “chop a sample into a cloud” toward frequency-aware granular processing.
