The Hydra
The Hydra is a free monophonic additive synth by bdenergy, entered in the KVR Developer Challenge 2026. It “constructs timbre from first principles”: rather than starting from a rich waveform and carving it with filters (the subtractive approach), you build the sound up partial by partial from a seven-voice harmonic engine.
Architecture
- A seven-voice harmonic engine; as you “release” partials from silence, a large X/Y pad controls Harmonic Bloom and Spatial Spread.
- Analog-modeled saturation and a nonlinear delay-feedback ladder filter add color after the additive core.
- The roundup frames it as a sound-designer’s instrument whose appeal is the craft of building a tone, not parameter count.
Available in AU and VST3 for macOS and Windows. It’s the clearest additive counter-example in the roundup to the FM entries (ouranos7, tetraop): additive adds harmonics to reach a timbre where subtractive/FM start from a complex source — the seed for the additive-synthesis concept node. Source is a press roundup (T3).
