Guitar pedal
A guitar effects pedal (stompbox) is a floor unit that sits in the signal chain between instrument and amp and processes the sound — overdrive, fuzz, distortion, delay, reverb, modulation (chorus/flanger/phaser), filter — rather than generating it. Foot-switchable so a player can bring an effect in and out live. It is the hardware, guitar-facing member of the effects family this spoke already tracks in software as the audio-effect-plugin: the same effect types, one built as a circuit or DSP box you step on, the other as a DAW plugin.
The analog / digital split
Pedals are the effects-side stage for the spoke’s analog-vs-digital argument analog-vs-digital-pedals:
- Analog pedals keep the signal a continuous voltage through a resistor/capacitor/transistor circuit — the traditional home of overdrive and fuzz, where the circuit’s own clipping nonlinearity is the tone. Low latency, simple, often cheaper.
- Digital pedals sample the signal (ADC → DSP algorithm → DAC), which buys programmability, many-effects-in-one, and exact preset recall — the natural home of delay, reverb, and complex modulation, which need memory and computation.
- Hybrid designs combine an analog path with digital control/effects.
Placement
Effect type maps loosely onto format: gain/dirt (overdrive, fuzz, early distortion) sits with analog; time- and pitch-based effects (delay, reverb, elaborate modulation) sit with digital. This is the same “the character lives in the processing, not a fixed component” idea the spoke sees in modular-routing — here read through the analog/digital lens rather than the signal-routing one.
