Reason

Reason is a digital audio workstation by Reason Studios, first released in 2000 and now on version 14 (2026). Its signature is the virtual Rack: instead of a plain track/mixer layout, Reason presents a graphical rack of hardware-style devices you stack, and — pressing Tab to flip the rack around — patch together with virtual cables. It is the spoke’s first full software DAW, and it wears the modular-routing thesis on its face: the routing is the interface.

The two forms

Reason ships as two things that share one rack:

• Reason (the DAW) — sequencer, the modelled mixing console, Blocks arrangement mode, live sampling, unlimited audio/MIDI tracks, plus the rack.
• Reason Rack (the plugin) — the rack of instruments and effects alone, loaded as a VST/AU/AAX plugin inside another DAW. It deliberately drops the sequencer and mixer, because the host provides those.

This dual form is Reason’s answer to feature pressure: per the review, it can stay a simpler DAW because anything it lacks (deep MIDI editing, audio warping, video) can be handled by the host DAW its rack plugs into. See daw for how this reframes the “one integrated environment” idea.

The Rack, the Combinator, and content

• Rack devices — 68 native devices (synths, samplers, drum machines, effects) with 50,000+ samples and patches. Flip the rack (Tab) to see and rewire the cabling between any inputs and outputs.
• Combinator — a container that nests multiple devices behind one panel, so a chain of instruments and processors becomes a single playable “combi” patch. This is modular-routing made reusable: build a patch once, save the whole graph as one device.
• VST hosting — Reason loads third-party VST plugins alongside its native devices.
• Mixing console — an SSL-style modelled desk, one of the areas the review rates well.

What version 14 added

A refinement release, per the review: the headline is a new Track Panel for handling inserts, sends, and track parameters inline — catching up to a convenience rival DAWs already had. No new flagship device or format.

Editions and price

The reviewer finds the subscription tiers “redundant” next to the perpetual licences.

Where it sits in the spoke

Reason is the DAW the synthesis flagged as the next scope test, and it arrives on-thesis: where the MPC One G2 is integration in a hardware box, Reason is integration in software — and its distinguishing idea is the same one the founding corpus keeps circling, that character comes from how blocks are wired (modular-routing). The Cubase comparison in the review marks the boundary: Reason trades a mainstream DAW’s depth (VariAudio-class audio editing, VCA faders, notation, video, Atmos) for an accessible rack-and-cable workflow, and leans on its plugin form to cover the gap.
